US failure hits European shares

European share indexes have been volatile in Tuesday trading after a US financial rescue plan failed to gain Congressional backing. With the US House of Representatives rejecting the $700bn (£380bn) rescue deal, the UK's FTSE 100 fell as much as 3% before recovering to rise 0.18%.

Asian stocks had already seen big declines in Tuesday trading. Wall Street's Dow Jones index saw its biggest one-day points fall in history on Monday after the deal was rejected.

Isolated tribe spotted in Brazil

One of South America's few remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed on the border between Brazil and Peru.

The Brazilian government says it took the images to prove the tribe exists and help protect its land.

The pictures, taken from an aeroplane, show red-painted tribe members brandishing bows and arrows.

Israel 'has 150 nuclear weapons'

Ex-US President Jimmy Carter has said Israel has at least 150 atomic weapons in its arsenal.

The Israelis have never confirmed they have nuclear weapons, but this has been widely assumed since a scientist leaked details in the 1980s.

Mr Carter made his comments on Israel's weapons at a press conference at the annual literary Hay Festival in Wales.

Cyclone mourning begins in Burma

Burma has begun official mourning for victims of Cyclone Nargis, as the junta starts to accept limited outside help.

Eighteen days after the storm struck, flags were lowered to half-mast to mark the tens of thousands of people killed.

The move could be a sign that Burma's leaders now recognise the scale of the disaster, correspondents say.
