The second president of the Republic of Maldives, Ibrahim Nasir, who led the Maldives' independence movement from the British has died at the age of 82 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Saturday night.
Ibrahim Nasir was living in exile since he left the country on 7 December 1978. His body was flown to the Maldives on November 23rd and kept for public viewing at the president's palace.
Born on September 2nd 1926, Ibrahim Nasir became the prime minister of the British protectorate in 1957 at the age of 31. He is credited with acquiring independence from the colonial ruler of Birtish government. He signed an agreement with the British that won independence for the Maldives 26 July 1965.
Three years after independence, in 1968 Ibrahim Nasir became the Maldives' first president of the second republic and held that position until he resigned 10 years later.
Ibrahim Nasir is credited with modernising the country's fishing industry and intruding tourism, for which the Maldives is now world famous.
