The Maldives presidential elections scheduled for 8 October 2008 will be the most fair and free election of the entire South Asia region, Maldivian Democratic Party  (MDP) coalition’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has said. MDP presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) made the statement addressing the members of the diplomatic missions residing in Sri Lanka at a dinner reception held at Colombo Hilton.

Mohamed Nasheed highlighted the efforts of international community to bring the democratic changes that Maldives was enjoying. Nasheed also thanked international community for the steady support and for patience in listening to both MDP and the Maldives government.

Speaking at the dinner reception Nasheed said even though MDP was rather unrelenting in their reform policies initially, the party later changed its ways and assumed a more flexible stand in order to achieve the democratic reforms expected by people of the country. Nasheed stressed that MDP has always been at the fore front of the democratization process of the country and in the protection of the people’s rights. MDP has worked relentlessly on bringing an end to President Gayoom’s 30 year old dictatorship and that forthcoming free and fair election is the result and fruits of that hard work, presidential candidate Nasheed said.

At the dinner reception Anni also revealed the coalition’s Foreign Policy. A copy of the Foreign Policy in English was distributed to all the invitees.
MDP coalition’s presidential candidate Nasheed’s visit to Sri Lanka to meet the Maldivian Diasporas was accompanied by running mate Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, MDP Interim President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, MDP’s Chairperson Maria Ahmed Didi, MP Hassan Afeef, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader and the MDP’s Ambassador to foreign countries Ahmed Naseem. A special break fast ceremony was arranged to meet the Maldivian expatriate community. Some 600 Maldivians took part in the function.

Nasheed said he is confident of winning the elections and forming the next government highlighting  that opinion polls for the past three weeks have put him in the lead. He said if successful in winning the October election, MDP Coalition will be the first party to establish a government in a democratic environment.
