Maldives clears out 'extremist' mosque

The Maldives government has moved to tackle the rising threat of Islamist radicalism as 300 troops surrounded and then cleared an illegal mosque that had been accused of fomenting extremism on the paradise islands.

The move came a week after a British honeymoon couple were badly burned in the Maldives's first ever terrorist bomb attack which has threatened to damage the international tourist industry on which the islands' economy depends.

'Militants' arrested in Maldives

Police in the Maldives say they have arrested nearly 50 people on a remote island in connection with a bomb blast last month in the capital Male.

Those detained were all Maldivians belonging to an Islamic militant group, according to a government spokesman.

Operation Complete:Army Clear Himandhoo Mosque

An army operation to free a kidnapped soldier and clear the illegal Dhar-ul-Khair mosque on Himandhoo has been concluded successfully, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) announced this morning.

Private Ibrahim Rasheed had been held hostage inside the mosque by ninety armed and masked men after he was captured Sunday evening in a failed police and army attempt to clear the mosque.

Fifty Arrested On Himandhoo

The Government has confirmed fifty religious “radicals” from Himandhoo have been arrested, while over thirty police and army personnel were injured in the clash at the island’s breakaway mosque on Saturday evening.

The arrests were made on Monday after around seventy islanders surrendered to the army, following a forty hour standoff at the illegal Dhar-al-Khuir mosque.

Police Question Teen Over Religious Text Messages

Police raided the house of a sixteen year old boy in the middle of Sunday night to grill him about text messages sent from his mobile phone quoting verses from the Koran.

In an apparent sign of government nervousness about radical religious activities in the aftermath of the Malé bomb blast, four policemen arrived at the Malé home at 4.15am and ordered the boy’s mother to wake her three sons.

The police asked all three boys to reveal their phone numbers, before taking the sixteen year old, who will not allow his name to be published, from his bedroom for questioning.
