Nepal bans rallies in Kathmandu

Authorities in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, have banned rallies and mass meetings in strategic areas.

The prohibition comes into force two days before Nepal's newly-elected assembly is expected to meet to declare the country a republic.

Bomb rocks busy Sri Lankan train

At least eight people have been killed and 67 injured in a bombing during rush hour on a packed Sri Lankan commuter train, the military says.

The blast hit the Colombo-Panadura train in Dehiwala station, in a suburb of the capital Colombo, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Pakistan in deal with militants

The provincial government in north-west Pakistan has agreed to pull troops out of a valley under a peace agreement signed with pro-Taleban militants.

The authorities say they will also allow the militants to impose Sharia law in Swat in return for promises to close training

Indian toxic alcohol toll soars

The number of people who have died after drinking poisonous illegal alcohol in two southern Indian states has risen to about 150, police say.

A further 135 people who drank the illegally brewed liquor are in hospital, some in a critical condition.

Bootleggers sold the drink in a district on the border between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Rivals sign prisoner access deal

India and Pakistan have signed an accord granting greater access to prisoners in each other's jails.

The deal came after two days of talks in Islamabad - the first since a new civilian government took over in Pakistan earlier this year.

Officials were reviewing peace moves which were suspended last year after political instability in Pakistan. The sides agreed to meet again in July.
